Transport in St. Petersburg
The fastest way to arrive to the city is by plane. The main airport of the city is the Pulkovo Airport which receives national and international flights mainly from Europe. Saint Petersburg is the second air-traffic hub of Russia; since its airport handle flights of around 49 different airlines. The Pulkovo airport has two locations; the terminal 1 serves mainly local flights and the terminal 2 handles international connections. This airport is one of the oldest passenger airports in the world, but it has been recently renewed. It is situated 17 Kilometers (around 10.5 miles) south from the Downtown of the city (around 30 minutes by car).
The train is another way to the city. Saint Petersburg has train connections with almost all Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the far Crimea as well as with Kiev, Odessa , Moldova Belarus and The Warsaw station in Poland. Saint Petersburg has 6 stations: Baltiysky (Baltic destinations), Finlandsky (to Helsinki), Ladozhsky (way to Kazahstan), Moskovsky (connection with Moscow), Varshavsky (to Warsaw), Vitebsky (to Eastern Europe). Inside the Varshavsky station there is a nice Railway museum; which exhibits many kinds of locomotives from different periods. The trip from Saint Petersburg to Helsinki last about 5 hours.
Saint Petersburg has also connection to Helsinki in Finland, Kaliningrad and Rostok in Germany by Ferry. The starting point is located at Morkoy Vokzal. There is also regular ferry connection from Stockholm, the station is located at the Primorskaya metro station.
The cheapest way to arrive to Saint Petersburg from countries like Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, Finland and other Baltic and Scandinavia sites is by long distance buses. Besides, the city has a quite good short distance bus service which allows the people to move into the city. There are three main kinds of buses: Regular buses (you pay your ticket to the conductor on board or show him a monthly pass), T-buses (Trolleybuses, they accept cash only), E-buses (Express buses, they accept only cash and are more comfortable and expensive). The regular bus network is quite extended and it is constantly being expanded. Usually a trip by regular bus cost 12 rubles. Bus stops are indicated by square yellow signs with the letter “A”. Also there is a popular transport mean named "marshrutka" (minibuses); they are fastest minivans which has fixed routes.
Saint Petersburg owns also the biggest tram network in the world and is probably the cheapest and fastest way to explore the Downtown. As at the buses you can pay your ticket directly to the driver on board. The ticket costs currently 12 rubles.
The most popular and best mean of transport in the city is definitely the metro. The Saint Petersburg’s metro is the second in Russia and one of the best in the world. It has 58 underground stations and 4 different lines. Usually there are trains available each 3 minutes approximately. The metro as well as almost all bus and tram services are available from 5:30 to midnight. A trip by metro costs usually 12 rubles.
The taxi service in the city is easy to get. You can stop a taxi directly at the streets or order one by phone. The tariffs vary depending on the distances; for example a trip from the airport to the Downtown can cost around $72. Some reliable taxi companies are: Arsio, Finnord, Drive-Tour, Globe- Auto, 068-Petersburg Taxi, Neva Line, etc. But if you must take a private car as taxi (quite common in Russia); you must negotiate a price beforehand (the normal price into the Downtown is between 50 and 100 rubles) and do not enter into the car, if there are two people inside. Another good option is rent a car with driver or without him. There are several companies where you can rent a car, like Herzt or Rolf; prices vary between $12 and $55 per hour depending car’s model.
