Florence is a lively city and throughout year a series of events are held, there are many local and international artistic and cultural events; there are many concerts, theatrical events and many other special occasions which are varied enough to enjoy both locals and tourists.

Florence offers locals and foreigners alike the chance to experience and even participate in many traditional festivals and events along all the year. There are elaborate affairs festivals like medieval re-enactments and other events with religious focus which go back for generations as the "Scoppio del Carro". Below we describe some of the principal festivals and events in Florence.

Easter Sunday: The Explosion of the Cart (the scoppio del carro)
This is an event with roots deep in history and the major festival of the year in Florence. On the morning of Easter Sunday, from Porta Prato to the Piazza del Duomo, a cartload of fireworks is pulled by two white oxen and accompanied by costumed revelers and various city officials. The cart is set ablaze by a mechanical dove which flies down a wire from the top of the high altar. A conflagration ensues and a series of flashes and explosions. The Florence’s citizens will enjoy good harvests and a prosperous year if all goes according to the plan.

Spring & Autumn: Exhibition of Plants & Flowers
Once in spring and once in autumn, an important exhibition and market of plants and flowers of all sorts takes place in the Giardino dell'Orticoltura.

Ascension Day: The festival of the Cricket
The festival of the Cricket dates back to the old tradition of pagan festivities, this is a bizarre Florentine event that takes place in Cascine park where, amongst the picnickers, there are stalls selling crickets jailed in wooden cages who are finally released onto the grass. This event remembers a ritual that celebrates the days when men placed a cricket on the doorstep of their lovers in order to dedicate a serenade to them.

June 24: Costume Football Game
The Costume Football Game is one of the major events in Florence. Florentine people argue that this sport dates back to Roman times and a game called "Arpasto" which was played by Roman soldiers, although the british claim to have invented soccer. A magnificent historic parade flows through the streets of the town before the games.

June 24: Saint John's Day
This is a celebration in honor of The Patron of Florence, St. John the Baptist. Beginning with a procession in the morning then the people leave Palazzo vecchio and walk through the city and finally get to the night show with the massive firework display up on Piazzale Michelangelo.

September 7: Festival of the Lanterns (Rificolona)
Festival of the Lanterns is also known as the “Festival of Rificolona”, this event draws inspiration from the pilgrimage of distant travelers from the nearby country of Casentino and Pistoia mountains, while coming from the country and going down from the mountains these people kept lanterns and torches and illuminated the dark mountain, country roads and the streets of the city. Inspired in these luminous instruments the Florentines created the rificolona, these luminous objects first were carried over the city hanging from a long cane, but after the people began to hang them on their windows.

November 23 - Florence Marathon
The Florence Marathon is one of the top 20 international marathons, it’s held on the 4th Sunday of every November and gets together over 6000 runners, sportsmen and enthusiasts from Italy and the entire world. It starts at Piazzale Michelangelo and crosses the Ponte alla Vittoria, then follows a course past Piazza Poggi, Piazza della Republica and ends at Piazza Santa Croce. Florence stages men’s and women’s events and also a special mini-run (Ginky Run) for kids. It is an extraordinarily glamorous marathon, thanks to the route of the run, and it has gained more importance during the recent years.
