Dublin Transport


Dublin offers an excellent air and land transportation system; it includes electrified trains, diesel commuter rail, trams and buses for the comfort of the Dublin’s citizens and visitors.
Rail
Iarnód Éireann, the Ireland’s national railway system operates the lines of Dublin and the rest of Ireland; there are the DART and LUAS which are electrified local services and tram service respectively.
Commuter rail
The Irish Rail Diesel Multiple Units operates on 4 lines of the Commuter rail:
Northern Commuter services (from Dublin City Centre to Dundalk).
Kildare Commuter service (from Heuston Station to far stations like Portlaoise)
Southern Commuter service (from Gorey to Dublin city)
Maynooth Commuter service (from Dublin city to far stations like Longford)
The DART
It is a part of the suburban railway network running along the coastline of Dublin Bay. The Dublin Area Rapid Transit (The DART) is an electrified railway and over 80,000 people use it every day, it is the greatest public transportation in Ireland and suffers of overcrowding at rush hours but there is an expansion plan which will increase the capacity about 40% by 2009.
Light Rail - The LUAS
In 2004 was opened a two-line light rail tram network called the LUAS (Irish for "speed") and it has become popular where it is used, it is uses by about 80,000 people each day. Today, there are some projects for adding new lines and extend the existing two. Those lines are:
Red Line (from Tallaght to Connolly)
Green Line (from St. Stephen’s Green to Sandyford)
Bus
The Bus operates cross-city and peripheral routes and it represent the primary transport system in Dublin. The Bus offers regular services throughout the city to most places in the country. Usually the service starts at 7am and the last bus departs at 11:30pm. There is a reduced service on Saturdays and a half service on Sundays. There is also a service called Nightlink which operates after these hours Monday to Saturday and bank holiday Sundays. People can use pre-paid tickets, you can buy daily, three day, five day, weekly monthly and yearly tickets which offer substantial savings for frequently use of the service.
Air transport
Dublin Airport is located in Collinstown, 10km north of Dublin city centre. It serves both domestic and international air traffic, registering about 21 million passengers by year it is the busiest airport by far in Ireland and the 16th busiest in Europe with flights to other airports in Ireland, Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East.
