Liverpool is home of the Beatles, a rock and pop band from Liverpool, England; formed in 1960 and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music, selling over one billion records internationally. All about this band, their clothes, style and statements made them trend-setters causing a revolution into the social and culture of the 1960s.

Liverpool is full of Beatles memorabilia. Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney had their childhood homes in the Allerton area of Liverpool and this was the inspiration for some of their most famous songs including Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.

The Beatles Story among other venues as Cavern Club is probably one of the many venues in Liverpool dedicated exclusively to the Beatles. It is located in Albert Dock is dedicated entirely to the Beatles and their rise. The museum was opened in 1990 and since then, it hosted over two millions visitors. Also the museum hosts a gift shop with many Beatles oriented gifts.

The Beatles in Liverpool

Founded in Liverpool during the late 50’s by John Lennon, a vocalist and guitarist, Paul McCartney (vocal and guitars), George Harrison (guitar) and Pete Best (drums), later replaced by Ringo Starr. The name of the band changed several times, from “Quarrymen” at the beginning through “Johnny and the Moondogs”, later to “Silver Beetles”, until finally John – inspired by the name of Buddy Holly’s group – thought up the name “The Beatles” – which was a wordplay with the word “beat” – rhythm, very important in rock music.

In 1960 they started working in Hamburg, in a night-club, where they formed as a band. They soon gained a pretty large audience. Their first single was “Please, Please Me”. The Beatles made a stunning success, their second single – “From Me to You” became a hit and their debut album “Please, Please Me” was a success on Great Britain. Their next single “She Loves You”, with the characteristic “yeah, yeah, yeah” in the chorus was first in the UK hit list, becoming one of the most popular singles in the history of British music industry. “I want to hold your hand” became single number one in the USA.

In 1963 The Beatles had the world on their knees. They starred in two movies (“A hard day‘s night” and “Help!”), which were hits. On the 26th of October they also received Orders of the British Empire. Their fame in Europe was small in proportion to that which they would experience in America. On the 7th of February they visited the USA for the first time ever, welcomed on the Kennedy Airport by thousands of fans and reporters. It was indeed a triumph – a British band conquering America, the home of countless rock stars.

In 1970 Paul officially announced he was leaving the Beatles, and despite legal arguments, the Beatles went to pursue musical careers and separate lives. John married Yoko, Paul married photographer Linda McCartney, George Harrison lost his wife to fellow guitarist, Eric Clapton and later remarried, and Ringo was also later divorced, started an acting career, and married former James Bond girl Barbara Bach. The relationships remained strained and although fans hoped they would reconcile, the reunion came too late after John Lennon was shot in 1980. The popular Anthology CD sets have John’s voice electronically blended with the others and has been immensely popular, yet a sad reminder of an era past forever known as Beatlemania.
